You arrive in Grenoble by road from one of 2 directions: from the direction of Lyon OR: from Chambery. NB: Grenoble St Geoirs airport is on the Lyon side of Grenoble so anyone driving in from the airport can follow these directions from the junction (no.9) on the peage (toll motorway), where the road links in from the west. Grenoble sits in a basin, surrounded on 3 sides by massifs of mountains, the Chartreuse to the North, the Vercors to the west and the Belledone to the east. The main roads lead into town in a Y shape as a result. You need to get out of the south side of Grenoble, on the road towards Sisteron and Gap.
You arrive on the the North West side of town on the peage, the A48, and follow signs initially for Chambery. When you reach the exit off the peage for Chambery (via the Rocade Sud, Grenoble's ring road to the south east side of town), continue straight ahead towards Sisteron and Gap. Then exit the peage at junction 8, signposted for Vizille and the "Stations de l'Oisans"("station" is the French word for ski resort, but you probably knew that already). - see section below for "Directions up the Romanche valley:".
You will find yourselves on the Rocade Sud, which skirts the south east side of Grenoble and then links up with the road south towards Gap and Sisteron, NOT towards Lyon. You then need to exit the motorway at Junction 8, signposted for Vizille and the "Stations de l'Oisans" ("station" is the French word for ski resort, but you probably knew that already).
Once off the peage, you are headed up the Romanche valley, leading towards Bourg d'Oisans and ultimately over the col de Lauteret towards the town of Briancon.
King of the Mountains is located in a small village called le Rivier d'Ornon, 38520 Ornon; tel: +33(0)4 76 79 99 27.
From where you leave the motorway at junction 8, head towards Vizille. Once there, keep straight on past the town and on through Gavet, Riouperoux and Livet on the N91. Keep on that same road towards Bourg d'Oisans and keep an eye on the km signs so you know how far away you are away from the town (of Bourg d'Oisans). 2.5km before Bourg d'Oisans itself, turn right towards La Mure, Valbonnais and le Col d'Ornon on the D526.
Le Col d'Ornon summit is very close to the chalet and is 3km beyond our village. At the turning off the N91, you are 8km from the village. Head straight up. Ignore any signs for other villages with the words "Ornon" in there - you are heading for "le Rivier d'Ornon" (or as the sign reads "Ornon"and underneath in brackets "le Rivier") so do not be deterred! Ignore the turning on your right for "Ornon" village, in particular. The last village you pass (on your right) before le Rivier d'Ornon is called "La Pouthuire", so keep an eye out for that sign. You will spot our village on your right with allotments on your left and right too. Pass the village sign on your right and take the next (small and easy to miss) right into the village, just after the barns on your left (go slow after the village sign and you will find it). The village is really quite small. Follow the narrow road down 100m until it goes 90' right and we are the first house on the left. If in doubt, give us a call . Parking is available up on the main road and also, outside of snowy months, in the village next to the church and boules pitch.
